Purification, Smudging & Aura Cleansing

To purify and cleanse ones self and surroundings is a spiritual rite of passage. A celebration of moving from oneself into a new enlightened form of old self. A lesson has been learned. An understanding had been made. A door must close for another to open.

What you’ll need: 1 White candle, 1 Herbal sachet for purification, 1 Purification bath oil, 1 Anointing oil, 1 Smudge stick, 1 Smudge pot, Salt, plus 1 Clove of garlic per room in your home, Intention, at least 4 hours undisturbed time to perform the ritual, your favorite crystals, candles and incense, tea, magickal herbs of your choosing.

Begin this ritual by creating a small sacred space anywhere you are comfortable and  within the place you are. It is a good idea to keep the lights low to enhance focus. Cast a small circle and fill it with a few of your favorite healing crystals and candles an incense stick, bowl of magickal herbs seeping in warm water. Be sure to choose an herbal mixture to that is loving and comforting to you.

Light your incense stick, candles and sip a tea of your choosing. Next, prepare for a ritual cleansing also known as a magickal bath. Taking a magickal bath is meant to cleanse and protect a person spiritually. This is different than a regular bath you may do every day. There are very specific directions to follow in order to maximize the effect. Among these instructions is not using any soap or shampoos as once you step into the water, you are entering a spiritual experience, so it’s important to distinguish regular bathing from ritual bathing.

Once you have completed your bath, it is time for a smudging of your personal spaces. For some, this is a room or an entire home. The reason for the smudging is to balance the energy of the room removing negative and low vibrating energies afloat.

Magickal Bath

Start your ritual cleansing with setting a soothing ambiance with sounds that are calming and comforting to you. In your bathroom, enchant, anoint and light a candle for purification (read here for candle magick instructions). Draw warm water adding a purification herbal sachet, bath salts and essential oils if any are to be used. Seep in the water taking a few moments to ground and center yourself. Once you’re ready, assign unwanted energy, thoughts or situations holding you back a specific color then begin to visualize that colored energy drawing out from your body and into the water. As your negative energy seeps into the water, concentrate on a new warm light filling within. As it grows in brightness focus on your intent. Once you have reached your brightest light and energy, unplug the tub allowing the water to drain out while you visualize every last drop of negative energy swirl down the drain. Once the tub is empty, shower residual waters from yourself and clean the tub.

Home Smudging and Cleansing

Smoke of sacred plants have been used by every culture throughout history as a way to become closer with our Gods. Smoke aids in enhancing ones state of consciousness and raises our vibrational frequencies clearing out lower vibrations and aura hooks. Smoke from sage specifically is said to purify the air from mold, bacteria and virus spores as well. To begin a smudge, you must begin with yourself facing east in the room furthest to the east as this is where the sun rises. You will always start in the east regardless of the timing of the smudge. To smudge and open for new beginnings you want to do this on or near a new moon at sunrise. To smudge and let go or release you want to smudge at sunset on a Full Moon.

Once positioned east in the middle of the east room, place your dish of garlic, dish of salt and smudge pot on the floor. Anoint your palms at your pulse points and at your third eye. Light your smudge stick and begin to cleanse yourself by fanning the sage smudge over your body from the floor to over your head, front to back, and all around you in a complete circle going clockwise in one complete rotation, then another circle counter-clockwise from the floor to over your head like a corkscrew.  Ask that you be cleansed and cleared of any attachments or energetic thoughts while you undertake the smudging ritual. Once you have cleared yourself, sprinkle salt in all four corners of the room, along any window sills and in the center of the room. Take your smudge stick and begin to fan smoke and pray starting with the bottom right corner of the east window sill. Continue along the    bottom of the window sill up towards the top in a clockwise motion. Repeat this with every window in that room then repeat the eastward clockwise process starting at the floor and working your way around each wall working your way upward. Once you have completed the smudging for this room. Gather your dishes in the center of the room, leaving 1 garlic clove in the center of the room and sprinkling salt on the floor of the doorway after you  exit. Complete this process for the entire house working your way from the eastward room around and out the front door. Leave remaining smudge stick in a dish beside the door and wait for it to be burned out. Never blow out a smudge stick as it is offensive and weakens your magick. Do not reenter your home for at least 2 hours. Bury remnants.
