The Old Ways

Winter was a time of hibernation, staying home and living off stored bounty. Our ancestors lived their lives according to the ever-changing rhythms of the seasonal wheel. They synced with nature as it slept through winter.

The Winter Solstice, also known as Yule, has been celebrated in cultures the world over for thousands of years. This start of the solar year is a celebration of light and the rebirth of the Sun. Though the cold darkness was upon them, the rebirth of the Sun was a promise of brighter days to come. People came together to celebrate in gratitude. For the return of the sun meant new life and hope was on the horizon.

Although there are many traditions across the generations and cultures a few things remain the same. I wanted to touch on those perspectives in relation to the wheel with this box.

Mothers Night

The first night of Yule and the night before the Winter Solstice, Frigg, the female energies and ancestral mothers are honored. It is on Mothers Night that Frigg labored into birth the Sun into the world. We honor Frigg and all mothers with a white candle lit in the darkness and burn herbs as an offering. It is a time to think about what lies dormant in our life and soul and consider what may bloom a few months from now.

Mothers Blessing Ritual

Ask the ancestral Mothers for guidance through the time of darkness into the new Sun cycle. Burn the herbs as an offering when asking for blessings for the new year. Reserve a small portion of the offering herbs in a white sachet. Keep this sachet as a token of their blessing and burn it at the next Mothers Night in gratitude.

Home Blessings

This time is traditional for ceremony and celebration. Gathering helps us to nurture our relationships. Honoring the return of light helps empower us to envision new ways being and giving in the coming year.

Burn your bayberry and dragons blood candle to bring luck and prosperity to the household. Simmer Yule potpourri warming hearth and home while filling it with scents of Yuletide Blessings.

Rebirth of the Sun and the Wild Hunt

Traditions of a winter king go back to ancient celebrations of the suns rebirth. Many cultures have a Green Man or God of Nature in their folklore. The green man always undergoes death and journey through the underworld before being born again in the spring. During the winter months, he is the spirit of the forest, keeping the fertility of the coming year safe until spring returns.

The Winter King is represented with White Tail Deer Antlers and can be invoked during winter when needed. He can give you the extra boost of courage and life force energy to pull you through difficult situations.

Winter Solstice Sunrise Ritual

Unlike Single Terminated Crystals that grow out of rock, Double Terminated Crystals form in clay, which is a much softer medium which allows the crystal to form two points instead of just one.  While Single Terminated Crystals focus, and amplify energy in one direction, Double Terminated Crystals are known to simultaneously absorb and transmit energy in both directions. Natural Citrine is a premier stone of manifestation, imagination, and personal will. Carrying the power of the sun, it is warm and comforting, energizing and life giving. It stimulates the chakras like the sunlight of spring, clearing the mind and stirring the soul to action. Its frequency awakens creativity and imagination, and sustains the process of transforming dreams and wishes into tangible form. With its pure yellow energy, Citrine encourages fullness of life, fresh beginnings and new pursuits.

On the brink of the Solstice Sunrise, light your gold candle and meditate with the citrine point aligning your energies and shifting your awareness to the opportunities before you. As the sun begins to rise, set out for a walk outdoors. Open yourself to be intuitive and mindful. Allow this time to be a spiritual experience where you connect with the rising sun and receive its blessings and omens. When you sense something as an omen, collect it and save it in your gold pouch as a blessing for the year to come.

Yules Fools Spice Charm

The misrules of Yule was a way of bringing laughter, light and merriment to the dark days of winter. Mulled wine or cider was a common drink shared among the feasts and fires. Add this sachet to wine, cider or other cocktail of your choosing!
