Candle Magick

Crafting a Candle Spell

Candle Magick is an extremely powerful form of sympathetic magick. Sympathetic magick is defined as primitive or magical ritual using objects or actions resembling or symbolically associated with the event or person over which influence is sought.

The use of candles as a form of magick is relatively new and is considered a modern form of witchcraft, magick and spell weaving.  The popularity of candle magick not only has a direct correlation to the availability of quality candles at an affordable price but also to the commercialization of Hoodoo & Wicca traditions. Pigments, dyes and paraffin waxes were not widely distributed until after the 1940’s and little evidence supports the use of candles as magick in spell weaving in ancient texts.

This however, does nothing to damper its simplicity and capacity for creating powerful change. Undeniably, candle burning is an ancient spiritual practice that has evolved into a complex magickal art and science. To practice successful modern candle magick, you must understand the principles of this art.

To craft a candle spell you first need to decide the spell or intent in which you are seeking. For this discussion, I will be creating a transformative spell for manifesting. My wish is to work on developing better control of my energy and align my chakras so I can increase my will power. What better way to make something happen than a strong will right?!

Candle Color plays a significant role in candle spells. Each color has its own set of associated healing energies, Dieties and intentions (White can be substituted for any color). Among many other things, blue is the color of will power but white is an all-purpose candle that can substitute any color and with its own set of associations that include transformation, spirituality and balance it is a better fit for my spell.

Now that I have set my intent and picked my color. I need to pick a candle. Choosing the right candle for the spell is a critical element in candle magick. Candles absorb energy of every kind, once ignited they transform their energy by fire through smoke into air. This alchemical process is the very essence of your spell. You are concentrating and focusing a certain energy into a candle then releasing that the universe to effect some sort of change within.

Because of this concentrated energy, size is a significant concern. Once you put that energy into the universe you cannot get it back so you want to make sure you choose a candle that has an equal amount of burn time to your purpose and allotted energy.

You want to make sure your candle will not sit around absorbing random bits of energy because you used a candle too large for its purpose. You also want to make sure your candle will not burn itself out before you have finished. Most spells can be concluded with a 4” chime candle in 1 setting. Many of the 6”-9” spell candles are concluded after 3 short periods on 3 consecutive days. Other spell candles include reversible, shape and multi-day candles. I consider them all to be a more advanced form of candle magick and for the sake of focus, will not cover them in this article.

For daily spells such as positivity, peace, abundance ect. you can conclude a chime candle will suffice. For Esbats, longer transformational work or target specific spells such as seeking direction, chakra alignment, protection and calling spirits, a larger taper burned over 3 days would be a better choice. In the end, the final decision on choosing a candle should balance burn time & spell time.

Personally, I need quite a bit of work on my will power so the success of my spell requires more energy than a chime candle can hold. For that reason, I choose a 6” jumbo taper candle. Next, I need to inscribe my candle with my intent. Due to space limitations and my desire to keep it simple. I will simply inscribe a spiral, a yin & yang symbol plus the word “will”. You can use any pen or sharp object but most often the tool for inscribing will be your Athame.

The next step is choosing an anointing oil. You can choose to anoint your candle with an all-purpose anointing/blessing oil such as Frankincense & Myrrh or enhance your spell with a specific oil based on its magickal powers. Frankincense is a sacred oil for anointing objects and brings blessing to the spell. Myrrh is an amplifier and heightens the effectiveness of anything it is paired with.

I am choosing to anoint my candle with my elemental fire oil “Hell Bent”. It is a specialty oil of courage and will for perseverance. As far as developing my will and the energy it takes to encourage myself to do things I fight myself over, Hell Bent will help with the resistance.

Weaving a Candle Spell

At this point, the spell has been crafted and it is time to weave. You want to gather all your materials and station them in front of you. I understand not everyone casts circles so depending if you are a circle caster or not, now would be the time to do so.

Begin your spell by visualizing your intent. You want to actually feel the energy of your desires, not just see it. Once you reach that state, begin by cleansing your candle. There are many ways to cleanse. For simplicity, pass the candle through the smoke of frankincense, copal or sage.

*at any point in your spell you may choose to include chants, prose or other vocal prayers. Those would be specific to your intent and can be inserted anywhere in your spell weaving process.

Inscribe your candle with your chosen symbols or words. Then anoint. To anoint a candle with oil you must do so in an orderly fashion. You never want to rub oil all over. There is a specific method in anointing.

To charge a candle with releasing or repelling, rub your oil starting in the middle of the candle and wipe upwards towards the wick then begin back in the middle and wipe downwards towards the bottom.

To charge your candle with energy of drawing inward. Start at the tip of the candle and wipe downward to the middle then again from the bottom of the candle upward to the middle.

Performing a Candle Spell

Before lighting your candle for the first time focus your intent entirely upon the candle. Visualize the energy you are putting forth to awaken the force within yourself to manifest a change. While burning this candle maintain focus upon the positive emotions of attaining and living out your desires. You should light and meditate upon the candle for the entire length of the candle in 1 setting or for 3 short periods 3 days in a row. Be sure to snuff out the candle at the end of each session rather than blowing it out.
